[Fog of War Series] 21. Arrow Maze (Standard)

(Published on 8. July 2023, 21:23 by AstralSky)

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply
  • Standard Fog of War apply.
  • Arrow Maze rules apply: Every cell contains an orthogonal Arrow. However, not all of the arrows are actually stepped onto. Draw a loop through the center of SOME cells starting and ending at the given green cell. The digit in a cell indicates the length of the line (if stepped onto) before stepping onto the next Arrow on the path and the Arrow indicates the next direction of the path. The path is allowed to cross itself but must not overlap itself. The direction of the path is not necessarily changed upon stepping onto the next arrow.
  • Uniquity Cages: Digits within a cage must not repeat and sum to the total (if given). In each cage, exactly one arrow is stepped onto.
  • Solve on CTC:here

Solution code: For each row, the number of cells unused by the loop, then column 8

I think the rules for the arrow maze are unclear. I would reword them something like this:

Arrow Maze: Every cell contains an arrow. Not all arrows will be activated. Draw a closed loop that moves orthogonally between cell centers. The loop may cross itself but may not overlap itself. If the loop activates an arrow, the loop must continue in the direction of the arrow for a number of cells equal to the digit in that cell, even if it is the same direction, to activate the next arrow.

I really liked the puzzle, but the already mentioned wrong number in R9C3 should be corrected so that one gets the nice completition message at the end...

@jhow25 that means that the "next direction" of the path is allowed to be the same as the direction it was already travelling.

e.g. suppose the path stepped on r2c1 with a rightward arrow: the digit in r2c1 could be a 4 so that the path steps next onto r2c5 which also has a rightward arrow; this is allowed.

The rules aren't very clear. "...the Arrow indicates the next direction of the path...The direction of the path is not necessarily changed upon stepping onto the next arrow."

Really nice puzzle! Same issue with R9C3 not clearing the fog.

Thanks for the very challenging puzzle.
When I finished the puzzle and clicked on the check button, I was told that that wasn't the solution. But the solution code was accepted, so I went back to the CTC app to see what was wrong. As bodemeister mentioned, putting the correct digit in r9c3 doesn't clear the fog, so I tried other digits there. It turns out that the app thinks r9c3=2, which conflicts with the given digit at r7c2.

The correct digit in R9C3 doesn't remove the fog.
