Fog, Deconstructed

(Published on 1. July 2023, 19:59 by jwsinclair)

Fill the grid with nine non-overlapping 3x3 square regions, such that each region contains the digits 1-9 once each and no digit repeats in any row or column.
Correctly entered digits clear the fog around them.
Cells outside regions do not contain digits.
Cages show the sum of their digits in the left-most cell of the highest row reached by the cage, and digits cannot repeat within a cage.
Cells with a shaded square must contain an even digit.
Cells with a shaded circle must contain an odd digit.

Solution code: row 10, with an 'X' for any empty cells (11 characters)

Awesome. One of my first cc. Hard but fair. Thx.

WOW. just wow!

Tough puzzle for me, with a consistent level of difficulty throughout. I really enjoyed it. I would have been lost without Simon's (of CTC fame) general discussion of commonalities in deconstruction puzzles.

Probably one of the best FOW out there.

Absolutely stunning, thank you for a great puzzle.

This is so beautiful, thank you very much.

Very nice one, solid 3.5 stars for me at least. The only thing I don't like with fog puzzles is that you immediately know when a digit is wrong, which feels a bit like cheating (I had this once or twice in this puzzle).

I was very impressed with the part of the solution for the bottom right box and how it interacted with a couple other boxes.

Quite certainly one of the best FoW puzzles I've ever solved, though 3/5 diff is a real understatement for how consistent the solve is throughout.
I really like how the breakthroughs work in the first 4 rows using the fog, and the puzzle keeps being engaging till the very end :)

Very slick logic in this, enjoyable the entire way through. Thank you very much for sharing!

Just to clarify, each row and column does not necessarily have the digits 1 to 9, correct?
--

Correct. Any given row or column could have 9, 6, 3, or even 0 digits; there just can't be any repeats.

I think this is the hardest 3-star I’ve solved: it took me 46 minutes. Fantastic puzzle, as always, but probably 4-star for me.

Thanks, glad you liked it! I had it at 4/5 originally, but obviously it's out of my hands now.

Loved this. It was really hard for me and not sure I did it the right way but I got there in the end. Love how the construction worked with the fog.

modified a clue because of a dumb oversight on my part
