Above Thy Neighbour

(Published on 20. June 2023, 19:20 by marty_sears)

Rules:

  • Each row, column and box must contain the digits 0-8 once each.
  • The digit in a yellow cell indicates exactly how many neighbours it has (orthogonally or diagonally) with a lower value than itself. Blue cells never have this property. Eg: a yellow 6 would have exactly 6 neighbours lower than 6, but a blue 6 wouldn't. All cells are correctly coloured.
  • White lines connect two digits that sum to 8. Not all possible white lines are given.

Please enter the solution code below if you solve it, and I always appreciate a comment if you enjoyed it :)

Highlight below for hints if you get stuck

Can you make any deductions about yellow cells in the perimeter?

Can you rule out any cells from being a 0?

Can an 8 be blue? And if so, under what circumstances?

What rule must a 1 follow in order to be blue?

If a non-perimeter 7 neighbours one 8, how can that 7 be blue?

0s, 8s, 1s and 7s hold the key to solving the first part of the puzzle.

Solution code: Top row (9 digits from left to right, with no spaces)

Incredible puzzle. I did so poorly and had to restart several times but loved it.

Wonderful puzzle and very challenging. I prefer this kind of simple rule sets that are easy to understand but novel and therefore hard to apply.

Great puzzle ! I was stuck for 80 mins because I couldn't see the white line against the yellow in the bottom row (for some reason the yellow was much lighter when solving on my phone). After that aha-moment it started to flow slowly but was still very hard.

Messed up on the first attempt about a month ago, but got it right today. What an awesome concept and execution! Thanks, @ marty_sears :).

Great puzzle! Interesting dynamic

Really enjoyed the puzzle! I definitely liked the unique constraint that every cell gives information about its neighbours. Adds to the challenge because it's not always obvious where the next break in the puzzle is going to come from.
