Hybrid Star Battle Series (020) - Shivers

(Published on 28. May 2023, 01:02 by BenceJoful)

Intro

For this Hybrid Star Battle Series I will be sharing a new puzzle each week combining Star Battle with another puzzle genre. This week's genre is Shivers, which was suggested by CHalb back on #006. Thanks for the inspiration!

Shivers is a very cool new genre (as in, there's only one puzzle) by wisty. I've tweaked the ruleset a bit (as I'm not using black squares), but the core mechanic is unchanged.

Rules

Standard Shivers and Star Battle rules apply, where each shiver has two stars.

  • Shivers:
    • Fill the grid with non-intersecting lines that turn 90* at each cell, called shivers.
    • A dashed circle indicates an endpoint of a shiver.
    • Letter clues indicate the length of the shiver which overlaps it. All shivers which overlap the same letter are the same length. Shivers overlapping different letters are different lengths.
  • Star Battle: Shade some cells such that each row, column, and shiver contains exactly 2 shaded cells. Shaded cells may not touch each other, even diagonally.

8x8 2-star Example (Penpa+ link):

Solution code: Along row 8, then column 8: if the cell has a star, give *. Otherwise, give L if its a turning point in a shiver, and I if it's an endpoint. In the above example, the solution code is ILIL*L*I L*I*LLII.

Looks very interesting. Question for clarity: A shiver may contain zero, one, or two circles, and any number of letters, correct? Thanks

incredible! 15 minutes for the example, 2 hours for the full solve. would love to see more shivers!

This is a very impressive puzzle! The logic between the constraints was beautiful, and there great mix of local and global deductions. Always glad to see more shivers puzzles as well. :) Thank you very much for sharing!

I'm glad I gave you the idea for this combi and intentionally didn't answer your half-non-rhetoric question about the ruleset but let you think :-) . A wonderful surprising puzzle we have here!

Thank you so much!!! This was amazing from start to finish! Very natural and fun expansion of the shivers ruleset, and the puzzle flows well too :D

Funny rules, thank you. I have very little time to solve nowadays so I am behind with some homework...
