Near and far (Kropki pairs/Remote sums/X-sums)

(Published on 26. May 2023, 13:54 by dumediat)

This puzzle was inspired by XeonRisq using the Remote Sums constraint that he created. This puzzle may be closer to 5-stars for difficulty depending on your experience with X-sums puzzles.

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Kropki pairs: Numbers separated by a white dot are consecutive, and numbers separated by a black dot have a 1:2 ratio. Not all dots are given.
  • X-sums: Clues outside the grid (gray cells) give the sum of the first N digits in their respective row or column, where N is the digit nearest the clue.
  • Remote Sums: A number X in a cage points to a second number Y located X cells away vertically or horizontally. The number in the top left corner of the cage indicates the sum of X+Y; the "?" indicates any positive value. Cages inside the grid may point to cells outside the grid and vice versa.

If solving with SudokuPad, I suggest using corner/center pencil marks to notate the X-sums clues in the gray cells to avoid issues with the conflict checker.

Solution code: Row 7 and Column 7 of the sudoku grid (18 digits, with row 1/column 1 being the first row/column of white cells)

"Love to see an idea get pushed further and further to the edge of what's possible." is a vintage XeonRisq comment.

First time solving X-sums and remote sums - only took 161 minutes, because I thought 3+8+9 was 19 XD
Beautiful puzzle

Difficult but fun puzzle. Nice idea, excellent execution. Love to see an idea get pushed further and further to the edge of what's possible.
