Dotropy (Entropic sudoku with kropki pairs)

(Published on 14. May 2023, 17:30 by Qodec)

Inspired by Mad-Tyas's recent masterpiece TENtropy.

  • Sudoku: Each row, column, and region indicated by thick borders in the grid must contain the digits 1 to 9 once each.
  • Entropy: The low digits (1, 2, 3), middle digits (4, 5, 6) and high digits (7, 8, 9) are defined as three different groups. In the finished grid each 2x2 rectangle of cells must contain at least one digit of each group.
  • Kropki pairs: A black dot between two cells means that one of the digits in the cells is exactly double the other. A white dot between two cells means that the two digits in those cells must be consecutive. Not all dots are necessarily given.

You can play this puzzle online using:

Solution code: Rows 8 and 9. I.e. the 9 digits in row 8 from left to right, followed by the 9 digits in row 9 from left to right, for example: 123456789123456789

One of my all-time favourites. Such a wonderful surprise that so little can give so much.

Great puzzle, the interaction between the dots and the global entropy restriction was magic. Thank you for sharing!

@Playmaker: Yes, the start was marvelous, as it's where the combionation of the two constraints comes to fruition. I also liked how the dot in column 9 joined in the fun just when I needed it to ...

I'm honestly surprised that no one seemed to mention how miraculously elegant the 3 middle boxes were resolved, definitely my favorite part of the solve. The later half felt trickier in my opinion with how the entropy works but the flow still remained beautiful and rewarding :)

Very nice puzzle! Not too hard in my opinion, but I have solved a few full entropy puzzles before, which helps a lot. Thank you
