Symmetric Miracle

(Published on 22. April 2023, 23:44 by Merko)

Based on the work of Farkov, Jay Dyer and TopAutism (see comments)

Rules:

Normal sudoku rules apply. The first digit in every row, column and box indexes the single marked digit in that set. Consecutive digits do not share an edge. Rows of box indices have equal sums.

Rule clarifications and examples:

If the first digit in row 3 (r3c1) is a 5, that means the 5th digit in row 3 (r3c5) is marked.

If the first digit in column 6 (r1c6) is a 7, that means the 7th digit in column 6 (r7c6) is marked.

If the first digit in box 4 (r4c1) is a 6, that means the 6th digit in box 4 (r5c3) is marked.

There is only one marked digit in each row, column and box.

Consecutive digits, eg digits with a difference of one, can not border directly either horizontally or vertically. That means if r4c5 is a 3, neither of r4c4, r4c6, r3c5 or r5c5 can be either 2 or 4.

The three rows of box indices sum to the same number. That means r1c1 + r1c4 + r1c7 is equal to r4c1 + r4c4 + r4c7 and r7c1 + r7c4 + r7c7.

Solution code: The 9 digits on the diagonal from top left to bottom right.

I created a solution video to show that the puzzle can be solved logically, without any exhaustive trial-and-error or bifurcation.

This is based entirely on Farkov's Easter Miracle puzzle.

I thought that puzzle was amazing, but that the final disambiguating rule could be improved to make the puzzle harder and more interesting to solve, and also to avoid what I consider a slight imperfection in having different rules for certain named boxes.
