Making a difference

(Published on 15. April 2023, 17:49 by hAndyman)

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply
  • Digits separated by a dot have a difference that is based on the value of the number in center of that marked 3x3 region (ie if the box had a 2 in its central square, all dots in that box would indicate a difference of 2...)
  • No digit can appear in the same position in more than one 3x3 box ('Disjoint groups' rule)
  • One of the marked regions is a magic square (where each row, column and diagonal within that box sum to the same value)

I'm late to the game on a very nice puzzle. The magic square was pretty easy to spot and definitely helped me. This was great fun! Thanks.

The magic square may not be needed to solve the puzzle (I can't say), but it certainly is needed to make the puzzle easy.

I didnt need to use the majic square in order to solve the puzzle. Just noticed it after the fact.

@BellBear, a 'marked region' is one of the 3x3 boxes with a thick black outline.

I found the "disjoint groups" rule to be very powerful and made the puzzle almost easy for me. I was a bit surprised since I usually struggle with even 2 star puzzles. Maybe 3 stars is a bit much? I guess it helped that I know how magic squares work in sudoku already.

Still, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the puzzle!
