Dex, the index switching snake (Snake/Indexing/Sweepers)

(Published on 29. March 2023, 13:39 by dumediat)

This is the first snake puzzle I created, and was inspired by olima's fantastic puzzle Zahlen nach Malen. Fair warning, this puzzle may be harder than the advertised difficulty if you have not solved many snake or indexing puzzles before. Regardless, I hope that you enjoy!

Ratings, comments, and feedback are much appreciated! Please feel free to reach out to me on Discord if you have any comments or questions. Please also feel free to try my other puzzles here.

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Draw a snake in the grid, with one end on the square in r1c1 and the other on the square in r9c9, such that it reaches each box once and does not re-enter a box after it leaves. The snake may touch itself diagonally but not orthogonally. Additionally, as the snake travels through each box, it must take the digit corresponding to that box (ie, the snake must take the 1 in box 1, the 2 in box 2, etc).
  • Cages in the grid are column indexing if the snake travels through them (eg, a 5 in r1c9 places a 9 in r1c5), or row indexing if not (eg, a 5 in r1c9 places a 1 in r5c9).
  • Circles in the grid show the number of snake cells in the (up to 8) surrounding cells. The snake must not travel through circles.

accidentally almost used the no touching diagonally rule that snake puzzles usually have, but then I read the rules again and realized they can. Very fun solve despite the brief scare.
>>dumediat: Thank you, I'm glad you had fun, and that the scare was only brief! :)

A very fun solve! There's some very enjoyable logic with how the index squares and circles interact. Well done!
