Forty Today!

(Published on 19. March 2023, 17:38 by HayTay)

Today is my fortieth birthday! So after decades of solving sudoku, I decided a few weeks ago, for the first time ever, to try and set one, using my date of birth and my age as inspiration. Please enjoy!

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Digits joined by a black triangle have a ratio of 1:3 and digits joined by a white triangle have a difference of 3.

All of the digits dissected by or orthogonally adjacent to the Red Number 4 sum to EITHER 19 or 3 in each row AND column, i.e. there are effectively eight overlapping killer cages, with a sum of EITHER 19 or 3.

All of the digits within the Red Number 0 sum to 40, but if a number is dissected by the red line it counts for half its value towards this total ONLY.

All four of the digits vertically in the centre of the red number zero multiply together to reach the total 40.

Numbers outside the grid indicate the sum of the digits along the given diagonal - digits may repeat.

Solution code: Row 3 followed by column 3 (L to R, Top to Bottom, 18 digits, no spaces).

Great bits of logic! The chain of clues is a quite sporadic though, which adds to the difficulty unnecessarily, but the deductions with the 0, and how the little killer clues disambiguate the end were pretty cool. Good puzzle!
