Creepy Crawly (Killer Sudoku)

(Published on 28. February 2023, 07:35 by Phistomefel)

This puzzle is a killer sudoku inspired by Gliperal in which the two numbers x and y which are used for a few cage totals, have to be determined. A word of warning: the break-in is difficult. Still, the puzzle is solvable without trial and error.

Here are the rules:
  1. Fill the grid with the numbers from 1 to 9 so that in each row, column, and 3x3 block, each digit occurs exactly once.
  2. We call an area surrounded by a dashed line a cage. Digits may not repeat within a cage. A number in the top left corner of a cage indicates the sum of all digits in this cage. The numbers x and y have to be determined by the solver.
The puzzle is also available online via F-Puzzles or CTC-App. Have fun solving!

Solution code: Row 8 and column 8

The puzzle for people who like to get the hard part over first :) a very enjoyable struggle

What a wonderful puzzle! It almost feels like two puzzles in one. A very tricky and satisfying break-in, followed by a rather pleasant killer sudoku as the reward.

Took me a fair amount of staring to start thinking the right way about the break-in, but once that clicked, the puzzle unfolded very nicely!

Great puzzle Phistomefel. I will echo the comments about the quality of the break-in here. Certainly took me a while to spot but when I did it was an extremely satisfying 'a-ha' moment.

Wow. Beautiful break in. i saw it after trying couple of options in x and y. After that it was smooth.

I spent a significant amount of time stumped by the interactions until they finally unfolded in a most elegant fashion. Wonderful setting as always.

Awesome break-in!

Absolutely mesmerizing ideas for the opening! (though it tested the limit of my arithmetic skill for a while there xD)
It's weirdly fascinating to see how the 6 and 10 cages came into the play and interacted with bunch of things, and the flow after that was smooth and satisfying :)

Very neat opening trick, and a smooth and beautiful solve thereafter! I can only assume that you will see some interesting difficulty statistics on this one. :-)
