Fairy Chess Norinori: Elephant-Ram

(Published on 25. February 2023, 20:30 by BMEP)

Standard norinori rules apply:

  • Shade exactly two cells in each marked region.
  • Each shaded cell is orthogonally adjacent to exactly one other shaded cell, essentially forming pairs of shaded cells.
  • (The pairs may be formed by cells belonging to the same or different regions.)

Fairy chess restrictions apply:

  • The shaded cells are one of two fairy chess pieces: an elephant or a ram.
  • There's one of each fairy chess piece on each pair of shaded cells and region.
  • No chess piece can attack another piece of its type.
  • Elephants attack the first two squares diagonally. They can jump.
  • Rams combine the attack range of elephants and knights, but can't jump. (Which means their attack can be blocked by an Elephant diagonally adjacent, as shown.)

(the attack range of each piece is shown on the right side of the puzzle.)

For the answer check to work you have to use Dark Grey or Black for the shading part, and mark each ram with a star (Composite -> Object -> Starbattle). You can use Tab to switch between modes.

You can use green to mark cells that can't be Elephants and X's (from starbattle) to mark cells that can't be rams.

((maybe it is weird that elephants jump here and rams don't))

Solution code: The number of stars (Rams) in each row

@Kafkapharnaum: A strange and bold puzzle that was quite a bit out of my comfort zone, but that I enjoyed thoroughly even as it took me a while to really grasp the rules! It's unfortunate that it should be so hidden, like buried in the site -- if I hadn't checked your profile, I would never even known it existed. I hope more people will stumble upon it and check it out. Thanks for creating this :D

@BMEP: Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it! :)
