Introduction to mountain sudoku

(Published on 20. February 2023, 00:58 by Nylimb)

Normal sudoku rules apply: Fill the grid with digits from 1 to 9, so that every row, column, and 3x3 box contains each of the 9 digits exactly once.

In addition, there is a mountain hidden in the grid. Its peak is at the 9 in the central box. The mountain consists of all cells which can be reached from the peak by repeatedly moving from a cell to an orthogonally adjacent cell containing a smaller digit. (See example below.)

Each cell which contains a triangle is in the mountain. Each cell which contains a circle is not.

You can solve this in Penpa or in the CTC-app.

As an example of the mountain definition, in the grid below the mountain is shaded, a path is drawn in red from the peak to another mountain cell, and some triangles and circles are shown.

Although this is my third mountain sudoku puzzle, it's intended as an easy introduction to the rule. Thanks to Allagem for suggesting that I make an easy one.

If you like this puzzle, you might also like my other mountain sudokus.

Solution code: Rows 2 and 8.

We didn't one of the paths. Had to get a nudge from the creator. My son and I really enjoyed sitting down and solving this together!

I could not resist the appeal of the mountain.
An interesting constraint to work with, thank you.

Never done a mountain sudoku, took me a minute to figure out what to look for, but went smoothly once I did. Great intro to the concept :)

Excellent intro puzzle! And nice innovation to use circles and triangles. I think the mountain concept is really interesting and this puzzle not only introduces the basic ideas really well, it's quite a fun solve too! I did end up at a logical contradiction 3 times in a row, so you do have to be a bit careful and make sure you really are considering all possibilities, but the solution is there and very clean. Highly recommend the puzzle!

@Allagem: I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who makes and repeats mistakes!
