Hybrid Star Battle Series (007) - Coral

(Published on 19. February 2023, 08:00 by BenceJoful)

Intro

For this Hybrid Star Battle Series I will be sharing a new puzzle each week combining Star Battle with another puzzle genre. This week's genre is Coral. This one is the closest yet to those good ol' Nurikabe star battles I've done before, but has it's own twist. The outside connectivity rule makes these regions a bit hard to squash together, so I hope you enjoy the slightly larger than usual puzzle!

Rules

Standard Coral and Starbattle rules apply.

  • Coral: Shade some cells so that all shaded cells form one orthogonally connected area and the unshaded cells are all connected orthogonally by other unshaded cells to the edge of the grid. No 2x2 region may be entirely shaded. Clues outside the grid represent the lengths of each of the blocks of consecutive shaded cells in the corresponding row or column, not necessarily in order.
  • Starbattle: Place stars into some unshaded cells such that each row, column, and unshaded region contains exactly 2 stars (1 star in the example). Stars may not touch one another, not even diagonally.

1-star Example (Penpa+ link):

Solution code: Along row 9, then column 9: for each continuous set of shaded cells, put the length of the set. For a star, put *. In the above example, using row 4 then column 4, the solution code is 11*3*.

Love these every week! And the other day I had to go back and do some of your catalogue of various hybrids, which was a fun trip.
