Extraterrestrial Japanese Sums

(Published on 16. February 2023, 01:26 by KNT)

Place the numbers from 1 to 9 in some cells such that no number repeats in a row or column. Clues outside the grid indicate the sums of connected groups of numbers in the respective row or column, in order, where empty cells serve as delimeters between groups.

The clues are given by an extraterrestrial, who uses an unknown number base N. The given letters replace numbers from 0 to N-1, and no two letters may replace the same number. For all clues, none may have a leading zero.

Loved that one! Although the E.T.s are always a big (but fun) challenge for me.

Fun puzzle, not that easy compared to the main course tbh ;)

@h5663454 Yes, any base is possible, but all clues are in the same base.

I like these aliens a lot. But although having solved already a number of those puzzles it took me some time to make my brain stop thinking the terrestrial way and to realize all possibilities.

Great puzzle, not as difficult as I thought I’d find it. This gives me a bit more confidence for the next in the series, thanks!

@kjholt You never know... the alien might know base 10 :-)

I wondered when this might come out and I'm glad there's an approachable one first since I probably won't even be able to do this one. Nice touch with the message in the cipher... Funny that the alien knows English but not base-10 ;)

@RJBlarmo As is the nature with many puzzles of this type... a brunt of the difficulty typically is related to determining the relevant number base. There are a couple different ways to determine it for this puzzle, but I agree none of them are trivial.

Very nice puzzle, I found the beginning steps a bit tricky. Looking forward to the next Japanese Sum Cave puzzle!

Beautiful construction! Although, I fear for the difficulty of the next JSSCC considering the time this took me to solve :P
