Caged Line Series #2 - Tracing Cages 101

(Published on 13. February 2023, 22:32 by Mikemerin)

Part of the Caged Lines Series

This is easier than the original puzzle and meant to better visualize the new ruleset.

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

All digits within each individual cage:

1) cannot repeat
2) sum to the total in the top left corner (if given)
3) are connected by one orthogonal line (path is to be determined by the solver) which follows a rule based on the cage’s color:

Green: German whispers - differ by at least 5
Orange: entropy - sets of three sequential cells must contain one low (123) medium (456) and high (789) digit
Purple: renban - consecutive in any order
Black: thermometer - increase from one end to another

Solve in Sudokupad (includes solution) or f-puzzles

Solution code: Row 1 thermometer bulb's digit, row 5

Sudokupad is missing the 35 clue in the middle entropy cage.

--

Nevermind, we just never used that clue lol. Sooo technically it's not neccessary :P

--

lol yeah this puzzle is solvable without the 35 clue, but I wanted it to be on the easier side as a 101 puzzle so it's there to help with the break-in. I'm almost done with two more devilish caged lines puzzles though that may or may not have numbers :D -MM

I believe the rules of entropy cages (orange) require some clarification. “Alternate” can be interpreted two ways: (1) it must go low-medium-high-medium-low-etc. or medium-high-medium-low-etc. or medium-low-medium-high-etc.; or (2) it just can’t have low next to low, medium next to medium or high next to high.

I attempted the puzzle under assumption (1) and ran into a contradiction. I would like clarification on whether I made a mistake or misinterpreted the rules:

Can an entropy line contain a low (123) next to a high (789)?

Can an entropy line go from low to medium back to low?

--

Hey Timwi, these act like normal entropic lines where they can alternate in any order. I just updated language to "sets of three sequential cells must contain one low (123) medium (456) and high (789) digit" to match the language used in other puzzles. -MM

Thank you so much for the clarification, that is very much appreciated. I have not seen this constraint before so I wasn’t familiar with the concept, and googling for it only gave me a full-grid constraint like in puzzle 0008G7. Apologies for being a bother. I’m looking forward to trying the Sudoku with the newfound understanding of the constraint.

No problem! Yeah entropy puzzles can either by “Entropic Lines” like this, or “Global Entropy” which requires every 2x2 cell block across the entire grid to have one of each low/med/high. If you have any other questions let me know! -MM
