R you Being Cautious? (RBC 1-6 killer sudoku)

(Published on 10. February 2023, 15:31 by sujoyku)

One week ago RockyRoer introduced the RBC 1-6 sudoku variant where you have to fill the grid with the digits from 1 to 6 and the letters R, B and C which serve as variables for the row, box or column number of a cell respectively.

If you have not yet solved RockyRoer's puzzle, it is highly recommended. After the fun solve, it was clear for me I had to build a puzzle with the new rule set myself. The following is what I came up with. I think it is of medium difficulty (especially given that the variant is new). As always, your comments are much appreciated. Happy solving!

- RBC 1-6 sudoku: Fill the grid with the digits from 1 to 6 and the letters R, B and C such that each row, column and 3x3 box/region contains each symbol once.

- Killer cages: Symbols in a killer cage do not repeat and sum to the little clue in the top left. The letter R counts as the row number of its cell (from top to bottom). B counts as the box number of its cell. (Boxes are counted from left to right and from to to bottom, i.e. box 1 is in the top left and box 9 in the bottom right.) C counts as the column number of its cell (from left to right). (Note that although symbols in a cage do not repeat, different symbols may contribute the same value to the sum.)

Here you can solve the puzzle online (after enabling the letter tool in the settings):

Solution code: Row 6 followed by Column 6, from left to right resp. from top to bottom (18 symbols in total)

really like the title. ofcourse, the puzzle too.

Thank you for your comment, zrbakhtiar! I am glad that you liked the puzzle and its title. In hindsight, it has a bit of irony to it since I made a mistake in the first uploaded version (see change log). So even when I named the puzzle "R you Being Cautious?" I myself was not careful enough. :)
Kind regards, sujoyku

Excellent puzzle, thank you for recommending it to me. I am not sure why this has so few solves; it certainly deserves more.

Thank you for giving my puzzle a try and for commenting, Tacosian! I am glad that you liked this puzzle and think it deserves more solves. Apart from being a rather uncommon variant, the reason might be that the first version I uploaded had an issue (I made an unjustified assumption in my own solve path leading to a non-unique solution). Anyhow, I am glad that you found it enjoyable.

wait, so the fear of using letters is the reason. i might as well give it a shot.

I also hope people will put away any fear of using letters and give this a shot. It’s very interesting how much of the normal sudoku logic remains, yet each zone of the puzzle has fresh logic because of the options r b and c can take change as the geography changes. Thanks for setting a puzzle based on my idea! There will be another one released on the ctc discord shortly…. Probably not going to make another one for here though, since my first was only moderately well received. Oh well. Can’t please everyone! Cheers!

Hey RockyRoer, thank you for giving my puzzle a shot and commenting! I still think that this variant is a lot of fun and has great potential. (At least building this puzzle gave me great joy, although I am annoyed that I initially uploaded the flawed version.)
So thanks again for introducing this rule set. Maybe some other setters will eventually pick it up as well.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Added another killer cage (upper 9-cage in box 2) to guarantee a unique solution.

Hey bigger, thanks again for your comments. Your image was very helpful. I was curious because my intended solve path was not meant to make use of uniqueness. After checking where you got stuck, I recognized a misconception in my solve path (which allows for multiple solutions). I will rectify this by adding another killer cage in box 2. Sorry to everyone who tried to solve the puzzle before!
Kind regards, sujoyku
