Look-and-Scream (Psycho Look-and-Say/Kropki Pairs)

(Published on 4. February 2023, 17:52 by dumediat)

This puzzle is a follow-up to the first Psycho Look-and-Say puzzle that bellsita and I created called Staurolite; please feel free to check that puzzle out as well. This constraint is a conflation of Psycho Killer (pioneered by BremSter) and Look-and-Say (pioneered by Derektionary) rules. I hope that you enjoy!

Ratings, comments, and feedback are much appreciated! Please feel free to reach out to me on Discord if you have any comments or questions. Please also feel free to try my other puzzles here.

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Kropki pairs: Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive, and digits separated by a black dot have a 1:2 ratio. Not all dots are given.
  • Purple cages are psycho look-and-say cages. In these cages, the digits in the cage point to boxes in the grid, and provide a referred cell which is in the same position in both boxes. The number in the top left corner should be read as a look-and-say number, which says the number of times a digit appears in the cells referenced by that cage (eg, a "23" clue means there are two 3s in the referenced cells). Digits placed within cages do not count towards the look-and-say total unless they are self-referencing, and digits may not repeat in cages.

The example image below may help to visualize the rules. In this example, if r1c5 were a 1 and r2c5 were a 3, then exactly one of the referenced cells in box 1 or box 3 (r1c2 or r2c8, respectively) would need to contain a 2 to satisfy the look-and-say clue of "12" (ie, one 2 in the referred cells).
