Snakomino [Level #1]

(Published on 1. February 2023, 22:17 by Christounet)

This is an hybrid of fillomino and snake, with some outside clues to guide the snake through the maze. It is actually the first puzzle I ever tried to set because I just enjoy fillomino, but it needed some reworking. Thanks to KNT for testing the (broken and heavy) first draft of this puzzle, and ONeill for testing this (hopefully better) version!

Rules :

- Standard Fillomino : Divide the grid into regions so that no two regions of the same size share an edge. Enter a number into each cell equal to the size of its region.

The light gray zones (including the nine 3x3 boxes inside the grid) are not part of any region. The numbers they contain are clues.

- Snake : one of the fillominos is a giant snake ! The snake consists of a one-cell wide region of orthogonally connected cells. It may not branch or touch itself, even diagonally. The first and last cells of the snake (head and tail) are in the 2 green squares.

- Clues : in the grey zones (outside the grid and inside the 3x3 boxes in the grid) are numbers that give the sum of non-snake cells in the row or column cells lying between the grid border next to the clue and the next grid border in that direction. Note that the borders of the 3x3 boxes count as grid borders. For example, the 23 clue adds up cells from r11c21 to r11c19. If a clue is in a corner of a 3x3 grey box inside the grid, it applies to both the row and the column attached to that clue, independently. For example, the 33 clue adds up non-snake cells from r6c13 to r6c15 horizontally, and r7c12 to r9c12 vertically. See an example below.

Note : you don't need to fill all the numbers in the big snake, as answer check is triggered by edges only.

Example for the clues :

I'm glad I finally came around to say hi to this long long long snake. Due to my limited experience with fillomino I'll abstain from rating the difficulty of it, but it was a lovely solve. Thanks for sharing this!
---
@Paquet Voleur : And the snake salutes you, dear solver ! I do hope you enjoyed it enough that you'll be eager to follow the next episodes of his adventures through puzzleland. He has a long way to go still... Thanks for the solve and nice feedback as always :)

The whole process of solving this puzzle is very smooth, and the logic of every place is very clear. If possible, I would even give it a higher rating than ”very nice”!
---
@h5663454 : Thanks ! A thoughtful comment like yours is better than any outstanding rating !
And I'm glad this puzzle was more to your taste than the one you painfully solved a couple weeks ago. That's kinda redeeming for me :)

I absolutely adore this puzzle! It flows so smoothly and never feels unfair. Could be three stars but I think four is appropriate given the size of the grid. Make more :)
---
@kjholt : Wow, what a lovely comment ! I agree the size makes it closer to 4 even if most of the deductions are around 3.
