Allergic to 10

(Published on 20. February 2023, 05:00 by Will Power)

Normal Sudoku rules apply. Numbers in cages sum to the number in the top left corner of the cage. Numbers can repeat in cages. Numbers with dots between them are consecutive. Not all possible dots are given. No 2 adjacent numbers can sum to 10 (no X are possible).

Thx to a comment from degustaf on discord (regarding anti-knight...) I found the issue. SudokuPad parses the rules text. If it finds "anti-knight" it applies antiknight rules in conflict/pencilmark checker. If it finds "cage" it applies killer rules... Replace "cage" with something different (e.g. "region with dashed outline") and the conflict checker won't activate on killer cages.

Edit: setting conflict checker to "on (simplified)" also helps! But that's something the user has to do.

As long as you are okay ignoring the cage conflicts, its a beautiful puzzle. I turned my conflict checker off until I got the cages all worked out, then was able to turn it back on the finish up the puzzle. Good Stuff Will!

I think the problem here is not so much the checker, but that it is kind of a slog to solve. Getting the puzzle to unwind like it does is really clever from a setting perspective. However, the break-in is really obvious, and then it just becomes rote searching against the negative constraint. It isn't a bad puzzle, but it doesn't seem like a masterpiece either.
@10feet Thanks for the comment. Noted. Most of the time, comments occur when the constraints are superfluous, or only used to disambiguate something at the very end. I try to vary my style as much as possible, to keep people interested. This one depended more on actual Sudoku than most. I didn't consider it bad to throw one of these in once in a while. How did you set this puzzle? Did you run any additional scripts?
Because I just set this with fpuzzles, all cages are cosmetic cages, and I have no issues with conflict checker turned on.

@Wuschel This puzzle was originally my attempt to set a 100% continuous cage with all the numbers within a certain constraint (which I hesitate to state here, so I do not spoil the puzzle). I set it manually. When I set puzzles, I use F-Puzzles. F-Puzzles has an option to set up cages that do not show conflict if the count is wrong or if there is a duplicate number in cages. This allows me to set up cages greater than 45. The setting in F-Puzzles went perfectly. For those who just are not used to the F-Puzzles style and limitations, I convert the F-Puzzles to CTC by replacing "https://f-puzzles.com/?load=" with "https://sudokupad. app/fpuzzles" and then creating a tiny url from the result. In that conversion, sometimes the CTC cage checker turns on, sometimes off. I do not know how to consistently make it the same as the F-Puzzles intent. As noted by Mr.CHEN, the timer works fine in CTC, and stops when the puzzle is completed when the checker is manually turned off.

This is one of the puzzle types that would have received a much better beauty rating if I had just not offered a CTC alternate version. I feel the conversation about the checker alone lost the puzzle about 20 points. I still consider this puzzle one of my best works, for style and inventiveness if you think about it. The fact that it solves with just one consecutive Kropki Dot outside the 80 ring (plus the anti-10 domino constraint) even made me laugh as I was setting it. -Will Power

Even if conflict checker is turned off, CTC will not stop timing.
Maybe there are other ways to make CTC think this cage is not a killer. I know it can be realized in some other puzzles.

I turned the Error Checker off in the CTC version to prevent false error on the 80 cage when digits repeat. CTC solvers should not depend upon the error checker for other issues. F-Puzzles has the ability to show cages with repeated digits and not require the error checker to be turned off.

CTC did not turn off cage conflict detection.
