Pirates on the Sudonean Sea

(Published on 18. January 2023, 20:08 by MarkV)

Ahoy landlubbers!

Welcome to the Sudonean Sea, where ye olde Sudoku guidelines apply.

Scattered across the sea be our Hidden Armada, whose location ye must find. Numbers outside the grid are the number of ship tiles in the row or column. For safety of life and limb, ships may not not touch each other even diagonally.

As our map was stolen by a parrot we only remember the location of 4 complete ships (as shown by yellow tiles). We need your help in finding the rest. Our 2 flagship vessels be the Flying Dutchman (size 4) and the Black Pearl (size 3). We also have Frigates (size 2) and Floating Doors (size 1).

Some Frigates are equipped with Cannons! Digits on a Cannon are lowest in the turret and increase along the barrel. After a day of rum, one Cannon was lost to sea and lies afloat in the water - it is rusty but we hope ye may still find it useful.

Once thou has found our Armada, help us ensure our ships do not sink! The lowest digit on a ship shall always be higher than any water adjacent to the entire ship (even diagonally).

The grey caged tiles indicate Whirlpools in the water, where values shall always be lower than all adjacent water. Ships may sail next to a Whirlpool but not on top of it.

Finally the black tile in the South-East is a dangerous Maelstrom guarded by Lighthouse #4. The briney deep of the Maelstrom be at least 2 digits lower than any adjacent water. No ships may ever come near the Maelstrom.

Now Hoist the Mizzen! To Sea!
