Japanese Aquarium

(Published on 3. January 2023, 23:06 by Jay Dyer)

Rules

  • Divide the grid into nine regions, each containing nine orthogonally connected cells. Place digits from 1-9 into each cell so that no digit repeats in any row, column, or region.
  • Shade some cells such that, in each region, cells in a given row are either all shaded or all unshaded, and unshaded cells are never below shaded cells in the same region.
  • Clues outside the grid give the sums of the digits in each connected set of shaded cells in that row/column, in order. If there are multiple clues in a row/column, the shaded sets must be separated by at least one unshaded cell. In each row/column, either all clues or no clues are given.

Fantastic puzzle! Really hard when you don't have much experience with aquarium puzzles. But learning the implications of the ruleset was a joy. Thank you

I wish that I had this definition of aquarium rules when I was first introduced to them. Very precise.

This puzzle introduced me to aquarium puzzles! I had to solve a couple plain aquarium puzzles in order to get used to the logic. But this was a masterpiece!! It's absolutely insane how people set these kinds of puzzles.

incredible puzzle. was always challenging to find the next step, but never felt unfair or too hard to make progress. took me 2+ hours, and I loved every second of it

Amazing puzzle. Took me a while to realize one single region line that I had assumed to be in existence didn't have to be there which tripped me up! All the clues were beautiful.
