Skyscraper Climber

(Published on 2. January 2023, 16:49 by WedgeOfCheese)

Normal Sudoku rules apply. The digit in the gray square is even.

Clues outside the grid are skyscraper clues, but not the normal kind. A cell containing a digit D represents a skyscraper that is D units tall and occupies the entire cell (i.e. there is no space between adjacent skyscrapers). A clue outside the grid indicates the number of skyscrapers in that row or column that are visible from the perspective of a one-unit-tall person standing on top of the skyscraper closest to the clue (the skyscraper they are standing on is included in the count).

The person may move back and forth along the top of the skyscraper in order to see as many skyscrapers as possible. For example, in the sequence 416238, the 4, 1, 6, and 8 skyscrapers are all considered visible, even though the person needs to move to the right edge of the 4 skyscraper in order to see the 1 skyscraper, and needs to move to the left edge of the 4 skyscraper in order to see the 8 skyscraper.

A potential line of sight that merely brushes the corner of a skyscraper without actually passing through it is considered to be blocked by that skyscraper. For example, in the sequence 431, only the 4 and 3 skyscrapers are considered visible - the 1 skyscraper is considered blocked by the corner of the 3 skyscraper.
