Single Killer

(Published on 30. December 2022, 18:32 by bigger)

Standard sudoku rules applies. Fill the grid with numbers from 1 to 9 so each digit occurs exactly once in every row, column and 3x3 box.

Number in the top left corner of the cage is the sum of all the non-repeating digits in the cage.

In my mind, probably in Old Miles’ mind too, this is the best killer variant. It looks like a killer. It has the potential of becoming a killer. But, it can be something more. And i aim for that more. Like i said before, if i have a chance, i’ll get around calculation as much as possible. With this puzzle, it means i need to draw every cage with a potential of having repeating digits inside. That’s a challenge. But at the same time, i know how to create the cage. I have a direction.

As for the idea, i thought for a very long time. I was thinking about killer variant, but every rule i thought of is long and i don’t want to deal with long rules, yet. So i thought, what make the rules so long. The answer, killer itself. So, i need to find a way to shorten the rules. Then, i realized, killer is what people think of when they want to make an empty grid out of extra group. So my thinking’s starting point should also be the same. And i actually find the killer is a second iteration variant. The single killer has a floor of being a killer, but it also can be something more. The question is, how much more can i add.

A nice variant and a beautiful construction using the whole grid! Here's a link to f-puzzles version: https://f-puzzles.com/?id=2pxh5kg3
