Deflection

(Published on 16. December 2022, 00:25 by Myxo)

An approachable Sudoku, meant to showcase a new idea of deflecting Little Killer rays. Enjoy!

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place each of the digits 1-9 exactly once in each row, column and box.

Each row, column and box contains exactly one deflection cell. Each deflection cell contains a different digit.

Little Killer rules apply. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the digits on the indicated diagonal. Digits may repeat along this sum.

When a Little Killer diagonal hits a deflection cell, the diagonal gets deflected clockwise by 90° ("makes a right-turn"). If a Little Killer diagonal passes the same cell multiple times, that cell's value is counted multiple times towards the Little Killer sum.

What a cool invention that was ! Reminded me of some laser game app where you had to light some bulbs by reflecting a laser source around the grid with mirrors...

Just found this puzzle on CTC. Wonderful puzzle, but one suggestion. I can see that the example makes it clear but the rules itself, all I saw on ctc, it wasn't clear if the deflection cell is counted in the sums. That is does it deflect from outside or inside (e.g. if r5c2 was a deflection cell for the 6 clue does it hit that then go r3c1 or is it a barrier so it goes r4c3to r3c2)

Myxo: That's exactly why I included the example! These rules can be interpreted in some different ways, and I felt like explaining them more technically will make them more complicated to understand, so I went with the "show don't tell" approach.

I really though when reading the rules that I wouldn't solve it. But it was really fun and very nice flow :) Thanks !

I was originally intimidated by the novel ruleset, but I sat down and gave it a think and the logic presented itself so smoothly. Great idea and execution, thanks for taking the time to set this!
