Shadow (Cave Skyscraper Hybrid)

(Published on 20. November 2022, 09:00 by tallcat)

I've never really been very good at pencil puzzles, so I had to set way out of my comfort zone for this sudoku. It took a lot of wrestling to get it into shape - but I am really happy with how it turned out and that I got it to work. Depending on your familiarity with Cave, this will be in the hard to very hard range. Happy solving!

Normal sudoku rules apply

Cave: The grid must be divided into shaded (wall) and unshaded cells (cave). The cave must form an orthogonally area of cells. Walls must form orthogonally connected regions that connect to an edge of the grid. Digits may not repeat in walls and each wall region must contain a digit denoting the region size. 2 x 2 regions of wall and cave are allowed, and given digits are in the walls (shaded).

Skyscraper: Clues outside the grid indicate how many numbers are "seen" looking into the grid along the row/column. Numbers are visible when larger than all numbers that appear before it along the line of sight. Cells in clued rows/columns are shaded if the cell IMMEDIATELY before them is larger, otherwise they are unshaded.

Solution code: Row 7 (left to right) followed by column 6 (top to bottom). 18 digits, no spaces.

Wonderful and surprisingly smooth puzzle! The rule set actually wasn't that hard to digest, but it's really easy to make mistakes at certain spots and be confused at which row/column should apply the shading rule. Thanks for the great smile :)

That is probably the hardest solve I've ever managed. The ruleset was both extremely "irritating" and easy to get confused with, but also very beautiful and "simple" at the same time. Thanks for a very nice puzzle.

Wow, I reckon that might be my hardest solve. I usually avoid puzzles of this complexity. Very glad I had a go and stuck with it. Very rewarding to finish!

very nice to see you branch out into hybrids of types you don't typically set or solve, this was a lot of fun to test. hope to see more like this in the future!
