Sadism

(Published on 17. October 2022, 13:05 by grkles)

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Arrows: Numbers along an arrow sum to the value in the associated circle, and may repeat if allowed by other rules.

Full Rank: Numbers outside the grid are "Full Rank" clues. Read each row and column from top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, left-to-right and right-to-left to give 36 9-digit numbers. If these are listed in increasing order, a clue gives the position of that row/column (as read from the end with the clue) in said ordering, with the lowest number being at position 1.

Solve online:

  • Penpa+ -- note that for Answer Check to work, the numbers outside the grid on arrow cells must be in blue/green/red, and anything else outside the grid must be in black or grey (or deleted).
  • I do not recommend solving in f-puzzles or CTC app, since you can't notate larger numbers. However, if you hate Penpa+ and really really want to, here you go.
    • CtC app (messy version with outside pencil marks allowed)
    • CtC app (clean version which does not allow outside pencil marks)
    • F-puzzles (messy version with outside pencil marks allowed)
    • F-puzzles (clean version which does not allow outside pencil marks)

Solution code: The 9-digit numbers ranked 9 and then 21 (18 digits, no spaces).

What an insane journey, full of several hard-obtained aha moments! With the flood of pencilmarks all around, it is so easy to lose sight of the obvious! I am amazed at the mind that can create this!! Thanks for setting and sharing with us lesser mortals, @ grkles :).

Awesome puzzle, but quite a bit tough, the full rank requires a lot of scanning (as does the solution code).
But I do agree with PrimeWeasel about the title, it's not really fitting.
The difficulty curve's evolution is very enjoyable, going up and then down.
I especially loved the short chains required in the bottom part of the grid.
Thanks for setting this, grkles.

Such a smooth and wonderful puzzle! Longer than most 3* difficulty puzzles though, so anyone picking it up because it's approachable and a beloved variant should be aware it takes a little bit of time.

Also, my favorite step was discovering how the arrow at the bottom of box 7 was restricted because a certain digit needed to go directly above another digit all the way in box 1 from the beginning of the puzzle!

Exceptionally evil but also a wonderful puzzle that exploits the power of full rank constraint! That part towards the end was the biggest WTF moment I've seen in a long while :o

Very nice dose of mental exercise on this one grkles! Thanks for the great puzzle.

Oh wow. I really thought i would have made a mistake but lucky i didn't. Hardest thing about this puzzle is you have to be careful at each step but otherwise it has nice logical flow

Is there an example somewhere of how the rules work? I think I understand, but I'd hate to get going and spend an hour at it only to find that I'm wrong.

~~

@Volkner you mean an example of Full Rank? Well, imagine that, say, r2c123 was 1 6 5 and r6c987 (note the order) was 1 6 7. The rank of r6 (from the right) would need to be higher than the rank of r2 (from the left), so the former could be 2, 3, or 4 and the latter could be 1, 2, or 3. Does that answer your question?

----

Yes sir. Thank you. That's what I thought, just wanted to be sure.

Not sadistic at all. Mildly torturous, and a wee bit bonkers.

A well constructed puzzle that showcases very cool full rank logic that unfolded beautifully :) Some of which were obscure but discovering them was rewarding.

Great construction! Really enjoyed it. Does that make me a masochist?

This puzzle was made with great care and demonstrates consideration for some of the nicer logical possibilities. Thank you for your creativity!
