Standard sudoku rules applies. Fill the grid with numbers from 1 to 9 so each digit occurs exactly once in every row, column and 3x3 box.
Digits outside the grid indicates the number of skyscrapers’ roof one can see from that direction. Cellars don’t have roofs. high buildings block low buildings.
1 will make sure the clues see the building(s) near the 1 have 2 floor height less. Different 1s don’t affect each other.
It’s eight month already? Let’s see how much i remember. I think this idea i mentioned it earlier to borescoper, because Old Miles don’t know how. I guess i don’t remember because i just check one off a two year check list, which is interesting to think about. Oh yeah, i think this is the first puzzle Old Miles play test for me. I think this is still comfort zone era, before i have to face with a lot of strange trouble. Outside clues are usually easy to made, especially when i have a good rule. and i didn’t use pencil tool, i used pen tool, that’s not a good option. And i only use black, which later change into gray. And the example is way too hmm.
Coming back is strange. I miss the time i have to compress the jpg into lowest quality to upload. I probably won’t do the 10 solved for 1 post trade out again. I remember some solvers only respect my opinion when they notice i solved over 1000 puzzles here and disrespect other setter who don’t have an account here. I don’t know how or why people think this place has the best puzzles. This portal is probably the easiest to log in an solve puzzles. But there’s also WSC and WPC and a lot personal website. The simping is just pathetic. I probably reactivate my puzzles for the rage.
To be honest, i don’t know what happened here and i don’t know if i want to know. Judging from the lmd fans action in China, the blind worshiping of this portal’s high rating puzzles and the idea of more solves means more opinion weight are just not helping. But alas, this is the nly place i record my thought. Writing the diary in my second language feels more safe. It’s like cursing in a different language. No, i’m not doing a peer review.

It's ok, Piatato's comment was helpful.

@Dandelo Normal skyscrapers, except digits next to a 1 are worth 2 floors less in their shared row/column. In the example, the values of the horizontal line reads 01236, while the vertical line reads 346.

I don't understand the rules at all. Can someone help?
bigger:ok, which part? try to understand the example. my main idea is to lock the effect into 1 row or column.

Extremely good puzzle! I'm very happy to see you and your puzzles back here. The puzzles that you post are always so inventive and thought-provoking. Here's a penpa link: https://tinyurl.com/2cmz9ykk
bigger:the thing is, in the past, when i leave for a rest, i don't deactivate puzzles. but i usually goes through my previous post again to see how i improve, sometimes adding some small update (which is another reason why i don't want any new solvers to check my early post)
by the way, this puzzle is not extremely good. i can do better. if you really want to support me, point out the part i did not so well. small things like rules constructing(good luck with that)naming(some puzzles don't have type name because too long or something else) or flow(when you feel the puzzle become boring or taxing, i might change things to smooth things up)or what you expect to happen in the future. i'm not interested in hollow praise. it's just show how ignorant the solver is without figuring out why.
Piatato: There are certainly a lot of puzzles that I will remember for longer, but this puzzle was just the way that I wanted it to be, and although "extremely" is a strong word, I felt that it was justified, especially considering how many much less good puzzles that are posted on the portal every single day. Your puzzle made good use of the ruleset, letting the solver discover a few key deductions and rewarding them generously for doing so. The last step was like icing on the cake for me, I really enjoyed it even though it was a bit unexpected.
Of course the whole rule description and also the example image is — as you put it — "way too hmm". "Cellars don't have roofs" only serve to confuse people. Then the special rule is not specified well enough. You should make sure it's clear that 1s only affect their orthogonal neighbors, and that a digit that is next to 1 in a row is not affected by it when counting roofs in the column and vice versa. Also the presentation of the puzzle could be better. Personally I would have wanted to give more emphasis to the puzzle. I usually show the image of the puzzle before the rules, only after a short introduction. Also your diary takes a lot of attention away from the puzzle, so maybe it's an idea to post anything not directly related to the puzzle in a comment instead?
bigger: oh yeah, the specification of the rules. miss Old Miles already? that's actually a very complicated matter. my idea choice leads me into this way, which has way too much to do with my history. in short, i use rules as gates to make sure only those who understand the idea has the fun. in this puzzle, i want to deal with one issue with the skyscraper genre. there's a prototype rule and this puzzle is a spinoff.
the thing is, everything you mentioned actually has a deeper reason. if you figure out the reason, you know how i set puzzles. use ruleset perfectly, maybe because i'm changing the rule as i'm setting the puzzle. rule first, puzzle later, because i want people to read and understand the rule, also that's a standard procedure. rules example puzzle afterthought. any alternation would be amateur behavior. and i don't want to be treated as an amateur. the long diary stuff, it's very useful. i know people who don't want to read long stuff are also unlikly to spend more time understanding the rule. it's another solver gate. you can trace the long diary history to my older post.
also, i think i need to say this. don't be too harsh on the new setters. you might think there aren't many good puzzles post every single day, but i don't think so. the old setters, most of them i believe, still abide the hidden rule of not posting too much amd still make the same quality puzzles as before, most of them at least. the new setters, i don't know why(doubt i want to know), comes way too many. and every
new setters need to set enough puzzles to find their style. it's the community's responsibility to encourage them and help them find their style. and judging from recent puzzles, i think new setters are getting better at setting puzzles. it's just, only very few would take the route Old Miles and I take. a lot of people think there will be no more new variants. to prove it wrong, i have to set puzzles. it's what drives me. but asking for this from a new setter would be absurd. my puzzles should only be compared with my puzzles and my puzzles only. for me, that unexpected icing is something that has a deep root in Sudoku, which is not my intention for a variant, it's an obvious failure. thus, 4 star, i don't like it, but someone else might like it
