What Do Killers Eat?

(Published on 24. September 2022, 14:44 by RockyRoer)

This is the latest in my "Sandwiches Without Givens" series. Other puzzles in the series are:

The Rules:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply.
  2. [Killer Sudoku]Normal killer sudoku rules apply - but killer cage totals will have to be deduced.
  3. [Sandwich] Normal sandwich rules apply - numbers on the outside of the grid are the sum of the digits between the 1 and 9 in their rows or columns. Sandwich totals will need to be deduced. In every row and column containing ?'s, the sandwich total will be equal to one of the totals of one of killer cages that it sees in its row or column. Nothing is known about the other rows/columns.
    • (Rule clarification/example: Row 7's sandwich sum is either equal to the killer cage total from column 1's, the 8-cell L shaped killer cage in column 2, the 4 cell killer in column 3, the 2 cell killer in Box 8, the 5 cell killer in boxes 5/8, or the 9 cell cage in boxes 8 and 9. The solver will have to determine what the totals of those cages are, and which one might possibly be row 7's sandwich sum.)

Wonderful puzzle! Even though the idea seems ludicrous at first, it solves beautifully with no unfair steps. One of my favourites from you.

Loved the concept ! Powerful combination and beautiful execution. Keeping track of the possible values of the ?s was a little challenge in itself.

This puzzle was madder than a box of frogs and reminded me of Emre Kolotoglu's X-Sums & Sandwiches puzzle. I loved every second of it.

What an awesome puzzle! Interesting logic, took me a couple hours but very fun. Reminded me of nonogram puzzles, which I also love.

This was an extremely enjoyable and rewarding puzzle. On my first attempt to complete it I got very close to the end, but then concluded I'd broken it and started again. (I actually hadn't broken it, I'd missed the absence of a '?' in a particular row or column.) But I'm actually glad I started again, because I think in my second attempt I got closer to the intended solve path and so was better able to appreciate the significant elegance you built into the puzzle. Thanks!

Reply: thanks for giving it another chance and I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment — these are so encouraging and motivating as a setter!
