Fill some cells with numbers from 1 to 8 such that no number repeats in any row and column. All empty cells must be orthogonally connected, and no 2x2 area may be entirely empty. We call an orthogonally connected group of numbers an island. Numbers cannot repeat on an island, and every island must contain the number that is its size.

Clues outside the grid indicate the sums of connected groups of numbers in the respective row or column, in order, where empty cells serve as delimeters between groups. A question mark can be any number from 0 to 9, but no clue may have a leading zero. An asterisk indicates obscured information; in place of an asterisk may be zero, one, or multiple groups of numbers.

Clues inside the grid are empty, and the number of values inside a clue cell indicates the total number islands that appear in the 3x3 area centered at the clue cell. Furthermore, each value corresponds to a unique island and indicates the sum of all numbers on that island.

A 1-5 example is provided:

109 minutes.
...However, after I read the rules carefully, I realized that this puzzle only requires filling in 1-8, not 1-9...
In other words, before I discovered this, I had already wasted about 1/4 of my time...

Wild that it took Xendari 45 minutes to see that only digits 1-8 are used... that particular deduction took me two hours.

Other than that, a very nice puzzle!

Great fun! Luckily I read some comments and remember to have the correct set of digits in mind. :D

lovely puzzle! I found it a little easier 45 minutes in when I realised it was only 1-8 lmao :/

Really nice!
I got almost all blackened cells and some numbers quite fast, but then no progress for 2 hours because i skipped the part with "place a digit from 1-8" over and over again. It was such a relief to eliminate the 9s :D

Very nice combination ! Once I understood the rules correctly (Thanks @polar for the answer to my question), it felt very natural and pleasing to juggle with the variety of clues. Question marks and three little dots are just insanely enjoyable clues !

@Christounet yes that's right. It can represent no clues (so just shaded cells), one clue (either ? or ??) or several clues (some combination of ? & ??).

Wow! What a brilliant puzzle! Quite challenging, but I enjoyed every single step. KNT, you have become one of my favourite puzzle authors!
