And for the answer:The Devil refers to sudoku setter Phistomephel and his famous "ring". Death refers to the number 4, which is pronounced similarly to the word "death" in Chinese and Japanese. The title as a whole refers to 4 not being inside the Phistomephel ring in this puzzle.
