Malfunctioning Modifier Mystery

(Published on 14. August 2022, 15:01 by mnasti2)

Inspired by the recent doubler puzzles. Think before you try to fill in three digits right away. Hidden comment or find me on discord if you would like any hints!

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Additionally, one cell in each row, column, and box contains a modifier. Each of the digits 1-9 is modified once. A modifier affects the value of a cell for purposes of all clue types besides normal sudoku.

  • Four of the modifiers double the digit in that cell
  • Four of the modifiers increase the digit in that cell by 1
  • One modifier is broken and leaves the digit in that cell unchanged

The following standard clue types are used:

  • German whisper: Adjacent cells on a green line differ in value by at least 5.
  • Palindrome: Values along a grey line are the same when read in either direction.
  • Renban: The values of the cells on a purple line form a set (not necessarily in order) of consecutive numbers.
  • Even/Odd: Cells containing grey squares have even value.
  • Kropki: Values of cells separated by white dots are consecutive. Values of cells separated by black dots are in a 2:1 ratio.
  • Thermometer: Values of cells along a thermometer increase from the bulb end.
  • Arrow: The values of the cells along an arrow sum to the value of the circled cell.
  • Killer cage: The values of the cells in a killer cage sum to the number in the top left of the cage.
  • XV:The values of cells separated by a 'v' sum to 5.

This puzzle was really really awesome! I loved how each deduction flowed naturally to the next. You can watch my solve on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/ZV6Objrj9rI?t=79

I really loved this puzzle. Each logical deduction felt like a win and I was really happy when I realized that the puzzle didn't require testing/bifurcation (rather, I was missing something). Once it clicked it unraveled like magic (but still not quickly, mind you). I hope you make more like this!

That was challenging and fun - thank you :-)
It required re-thinking the logic for each of the constraints, and more dead-end-restarts than I'd like to admit :-)
