The Last Hurrah?

(Published on 2. August 2022, 07:17 by Playmaker6174)

The following puzzle is my attempt at trying to set a "miracle type" puzzle and probably my last ever puzzle in a long time. Setting puzzles these days isn't much fun for me anymore, as the interest has been dropping quite a lot recently. For this time, I think of the one challenge of setting a puzzle with pure ambiguous clues, mainly inspired by this extraordinary puzzle from kolot and my pure ambiguous 6x6 puzzle in my 6x6 pack.

Despite the extra clue in the grid it's still "technically" full ambiguous anyway. Estimated difficulty is in the range 4-4.5, but can be lower depends on how fast you understand the main ideas, I hope you enjoy!

Will I return to setting? Only time will tell, but I'll still be here solving...

Rules:

- Normal Sudoku rules apply for the 9x9 grid: every row, column and 3x3 box contains digits from 1 to 9 each once.

- A ? clue outside the grid shows the sum of the first X cells from its corresponding direction, where X is the value of the first cell; a ? clue also shows the sum of two adjacent cells next to 9 in that respective row/column, in case 9 is next to the grid border, the sum is instead the value of the cell right next to it. The value of each ? clue is to be deduced.

- The white dot shows the consecutive relationship between two cells.

To demonstrate how the second rule works, for a row with ? clue, (?) 256749318 would be valid because 2+5 = 4+3 =7, or (?) 256431879 would be valid because 2+5=7.

I kept trying to submit my solution and getting frustrated because it wouldn't accept it, searching my grid for a contradiction and finding none... only to realize I had accidentally tried to enter the solution in kolot's puzzle hahahaha. Anyway I loved this! It's so minimalistic and was so fun to solve. The grid and ruleset are so simple and yet came together marvelously.

Very enjoyable, with a fascinating ruleset! I really hope you’ll feel the urge to set more puzzles again quite soon, but I guess I cannot really complain since I’ve failed to publish anything for half a year now, haha

Really an outstanding construction. Quite challenging at times but not nearly as brutal as I feared! I loved every step of it! :^) (Except the use of the white dot - seeing where that one came in was kind of heartbreaking haha)
Thanks for all the great puzzles you made so far, they really make up a fair share of my favourites on this site! Hope to see you return to setting someday if you're ever interested again :^)
