Roll Out the Red Carpets

(Published on 29. July 2022, 21:18 by Arlo Lipof)

To create this Sudoku I took inspiration from this puzzle by jackisaacbryan.

Rules:

  • Sudoku. Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Red carpets. Digits along a red line must repeat in the same order when the carpet is rolled out starting from the dotted end (e.g. the digits along the line in box 7 will unroll up column 3, duplicating R8C2 in R1C3).
  • XV. Digits in cells joined by a V sum to 5, and digits in cells joined by an X sum to 10. Not all Xs and Vs are given.

I hope you'll enjoy this fun puzzle! Ratings and comments are welcome of course.

Solution code: Row 2 then Column 5 (18-digit number without spaces)

I’m not understanding the “red carpet” rule do you have a small scale example of how the rule works?

A: The visual explanation I added should clear things up.

AH! Yes, ok solve now in progress.

Yeah, this just isn't working for my brain this morning, might come back to it but at least I understand the intent of the rules

Indeed the hardest part of the solve was understanding the carpet rule. Funny puzzle.

Anyone has an Example? I sit here for 20min and i still dont get the carpet rule. Why is R8C2 duplicated to R1C3?

A: Let’s focus on the carpet in Box 7. It is formed of 9 cells. Starting from the dot, the first 3 cells (in Column 3) don’t move. The 4th cell (R7C2) will be unrolled to R6C3, the 5th cell (R7C1) to R5C3 and so on up to the 9th cell (R8C2) that will be mapped to R1C3.

Got it! Thanks for explaining :) Was fun!
