Xavier the Snake

(Published on 19. July 2022, 00:59 by Scruffamudda)

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Within the grid lies a single snake of orthogonally connected digits which must not touch itself (even diagonally), must not visit any cell marked with an X, but must visit every 3x3 box.
Adjacent pairs of digits on the snake within the same 3x3 box must sum to either 5 or 10. Adjacent digits on the snake which cross a box border must be consecutive.

Digits in grey squares are not part of the snake but must show the number of snake cells in the surrounding (up to) 8 cells.

Each X joins a pair of digits which sum to 10. All possible Xs which do not touch the snake are given.

Can you please give an example of what adjacent pairs of digits are. I do not understand it.
Suppose in a box the snake is 5 fields long with the values A - B - C - D - E. What must be 5 or 10 then?
A+B and B+C and C+D and D+E? This should be impossible.
Or just the borders? So B+C and D+E? But where do you count from then? From the left or the right? Because from the right it would then be A+B and C+D.
Sorry, I don't understand the rule.
----------
A legitimate string of digits on the snake within a box would be (for eg.) 9-1-4-6

I had trouble with this for a while because I didn't fully understand the ruleset. I didn't realize the wording of "*pairs* of digits" was so important orz
After it clicked, this was a very nice puzzle! Thank you for setting.

I think I must have misunderstood something about the rules, because I keep retrying this puzzle and coming to a contradiction. Is the snake allowed to pass through the grey cells?
-------
The snake must not pass through grey cells or cells connected to an X.

I've done it twice, because I've confused about the values in r8c7 and r8c8. May be me interpretation of "touch" was wrong. Nevertheless a nice puzzle.

Oh, you are right! I have missed an X. Thanks for pointing that out! Updating now...

I normally don't like snake puzzles but this one was so nice. Very approachable and fun. Thanks for this one.

Super fun puzzle and an intuitive ruleset from which the logic flowed really nicely. Bravo
