Ma'at's Transcript: Order from Chaos (Chaos Construction)

(Published on 13. July 2022, 13:07 by Chilly)

This is my follow-up puzzle to Fractional Dimension. Testers have varied in their estimation of difficulty from 3.5 to 5, so I have set this at 4, which I think is about right, although some may find it easier or harder. I hope you enjoy.

The Rules:

  • Each row, column and region must contain one complete set of the digits 1-9, with no repeats. Regions are orthogonally connected, and must be determined by the solver.
  • The digit in a cell behind an arrow indicates the number of region borders in the grid in the direction of the arrow. If there is more than one arrow the number of borders is the same in each direction, not the total for all directions. The outer edge of the grid does not count as a border.
  • A digit in a square indicates the number of cells in the line of sight of the digit that are in the same region as the digit, including itself - the digit cannot see through borders.

This example 6x6 puzzle, and its solution, will hopefully show solvers how the rule set works. It is playable using the links below, and is easier than the main 9x9 puzzle.

I'm a little late to this party but thankfully the party is still raging! I was devastated halfway through when I thought I broke it, but luckily I gave it a think and realized I made a misassumption building the regions and prevailed.

Thanks for taking your time to set this gem!

-- Thanks for the kind words - glad you made it through, and enjoyed :)

Thanks for this puzzle! CC's are among my favorite types of puzzle, and this one was enjoyable. Took a while to get a hang of the logic of the ruleset, and even after that it was a difficult solve. Glad I stuck with it to the end, though. Rewarding and satisfying solve!

Thanks for persevering :)

It was really, really great. For me the irregular sudoku was more challenging than region part.

Thanks so much! :)

CC's are not a strength of mine but even so, i found this very hard. Took me close to 2 hours to complete. The ruleset combo is very interesting but took me a while to get used to where to look.

-Reply- Thanks Tallcat. Glad you made it through. I think next time I will make the Sudoku easier, but I'm glad you found the ruleset interesting.

Very nice ! The irregular sudoku was quite tougher than the construction part for me, and required patient scanning in the end.

Very hard but very enjoyable! Thanks, @ Chilly :) One difficulty is that on the CTC app (which i prefer to use) once you use the pen tool to mark an x for the boundary, the given <> signs are hidden, making further processing a bit tedious. Nevertheless, a fun ride!

-Reply- Thanks for the solve!

Beautiful solution path leading into an not to easy irregular sudoku.
Well set, was a joy to solve!

Took me about 70 minutes so i think 4 Stars is quite alright in difficulty.

-Reply- Thanks so much. Glad you liked it.
