Thorny Tie (Killer Deconstruction)

(Published on 12. July 2022, 09:00 by Agent)

I challenged myself to create a deconstruction puzzle with only one cage total, and here is the result. This was inspired by Jay Dyer's amazing deconstruction puzzle, Jormungandr. I hope you will enjoy!

Rules

  • Normal deconstruction rules apply. The grid contains nine non-overlapping 3x3 regions which must be located. Each region contains the digits 1 to 9 once each, such that no digit repeats in any row or column. Cells outside regions do not contain digits.
  • Digits in cages cannot repeat and must sum to 31. Cells outside regions do not contribute to the cage total.

This puzzle is a lot easier if you know the deconstruction secret: (R3C3, R3C6, R3C9, R6C3, R6C6, R6C9, R9C3, R9C6, and R9C9 must belong to a region. This is because regions only have 2 degrees of freedom horizontally and vertically. The respective regions must be fully contained in the 5x5 area centered around those cells.)

Have fun solving!

Solution code: Row 5 (left to right) then row 10 (left to right). Use X for empty cells. 22 characters in total.

What a puzzle! LMD needs to make its difficulty scale go up to 6, or perhaps even 11. A beautiful start - even though I did know the deconstruction secret I was slow to spot it. But then it flowed beautifully until the sudoku started and I hit a wall. I think this is one of those puzzles where you need to have a few particular insights. Very satisfying to solve, thanks Agent for a wonderful puzzle.

Absolutely brilliant. I'd say more, but this puzzle has already taken up too much of my time today :)

-- Thanks for solving @jwsinclair!

Beautiful grid ! Both the construction and filling part contained cool logic! Learned a lot of things about 31 cages !!

-- Thanks @Christounet, glad you enjoyed both parts of the puzzle!

What a beauty and what nicely placed gaps!

-- Thank you @bansalsaab. And yes, all the gaps are there for a very specific reason :)
