Growth

(Published on 18. June 2022, 08:00 by Nordy)

This puzzle was supposed to be a standard Killer Sudoku, but I accidentally made the cages too small! Can you help them grow?

Rules:

Normal Sudoku: Place the digits 1 to 9 in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Growing Cages (+1 Cell):

  • Each cage must extend into one orthogonally adjacent cell so that it contains a total of three digits (Domino cages → tromino cages).
  • Cages cannot extend into the same cell or into other cages (cages do not overlap).
  • The number in the top left corner of a cage gives the sum of all three digits that it contains.
  • Digits cannot repeat in cages.

This is a fun ruleset -- can't wait to see even more like it! Now I'm wondering about the oppoiste -- where each killer cage is one too big and needs a cell removed...

Beautiful puzzle with an innovative idea and a smooth and logical solve path. I really like it, also I'm not that big killer fan like Simon. I'm sure he'll love it over the moon!
We have a "plus one" for the cages as for a party, so it is a "Party Killer"? :-)

This had a surprisingly smooth solve path given how novel the ruleset is. Well made, thank you for setting this.

Thanks for solving and the nice comments!

@twobear: I do think it is technically possible! Although one of the puzzles would likely have a lot of extraneous clues…

@Phistomefel: I expected more puzzles like this to exist! Thanks for sharing. It’s a very fun puzzle type to set—just the right amount of flexibility

Very nice!
By the way, I wonder whether one can construct killer cages so that the “standard version” and the “+1 version” both are valid puzzles with unique solutions

Very nice one! I really like the idea and I think it is very similar to RockyRoer's Dropsies (https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Raetsel/zeigen.php?id=0004BB). Thank you for setting this puzzel, Nordy! :)
