Twin Rooms (Chaos Construction)

(Published on 14. June 2022, 09:00 by Agent)

This is an idea I had for a numbered rooms chaos construction variant. It differs from normal chaos constructions in that digits can repeat in some regions, but only under certain conditions. I hope you will enjoy :)

Rules

  • Each row and each column must contain the digits 1 to 9 once each. The grid contains 9 regions which must be determined by the solver. Each region consists of 9 orthogonally connected cells.

  • Clues outside the grid are numbered rooms clues. They indicate the digit which has to be placed in the Nth cell in the corresponding direction, where N is the digit placed in the first cell in that direction. Clues with a question mark must be determined by the solver.

  • The grid contains some twin cells. Digits in twin cells must appear at least twice in their region, and they are the only repeating digits allowed in any region. All twin cells with the same digit must belong to the same region, and twin cells within that region cannot contain any other digit. It is possible that some regions don't have any twin cells.

  • The positions of twin cells are defined by numbered rooms clue. Each numbered rooms clue must point to a twin cell, and each twin cell must be referenced by a numbered rooms clue exactly once.

Because I suspect this ruleset will be a bit counter-intuitive, I also made a 6x6 example puzzle called Twin Roomlets.

Ha, Agent likes to mess with your head. If you can get through this puzzle without once forgetting that numbers can repeat you're doing well. Thanks!

The first region logic is a real treat ! And then, all the rest unfolds very smoothly with just enough surprises along the way to keep the solver on the edge and entertained ! Thanks for this beautiful puzzle !

-- Thanks @Christounet! It always makes me happy to read nice comments, especially as this puzzle holds a special place in my experience as a setter.
