Pentomino Sudoku

(Published on 11. June 2022, 17:22 by KNT)

Place the numbers from 1 to 9 exactly once in every row, column, and box.

Place exactly one of each of the 12 pentomino shapes in the grid. Pentominos cannot overlap, but may touch. A cell with a clue indicates which pentomino must occupy that cell, and a pentomino may contain at most one clue. A clue outside the grid indicates the sum of numbers not in pentominos in the row or column.

Each pentomino must satisfy at least one of the two conditions:

1. Adjacent numbers in the pentomino must differ by at least 5.

2. The sum of the numbers in the pentomino is the same in each box of the sudoku that the pentomino is in. If a pentomino is wholly contained in a single box, this condition is invalid.

You may have cured my pentominophobia with this puzzle, haha! I started out being quite terrified, but ended up triumphant. :-D Incredible puzzle, btw.

Wonderful puzzle, I somehow missed this one before! Very challenging and satisfying solution path that gradually gets easier towards the end. Thank you KNT and thanks for the mention of my puzzle as well! :)

Most of my puzzles are directly inspired by things I solve in weeks or days prior, I tend to just see something I love and try to put a spin on it.. but a lot of the times they end up harder than I intend haha. This puzzle in particular ended up totally not how I expected (I had to pretty aggressively use a computer solver to find a valid end arrangement of the pentominos) but I'm glad you and others really like it. The positive feedback I tend to get really makes my day :)

Incredible rich and delicate interplay between the clues - love how this puzzle, despite of having a narrow, linear solving path, requires one to go back and forth between different clues over and over again in order to make progress.

Phenomenally good! I concur with the testers that the logic was fresh and interesting throughout. No step felt unfair to me, including the mid-solve. This is probably my favourite puzzle of yours, which is a very high bar. Thanks KNT! :D
