Rowing (Whisper Sum Sudoku)

(Published on 16. May 2022, 09:00 by Agent)

After solving Qodec's recent puzzle which included Chinese whispers (or "telephone lines", as it was suggested that another name should be adopted for this variant), I was inspired to explore this constraint some more. At the same time, I remembered puzzles from Tallcat, Kilonum, and AnalyticalNinja on the CTC Discord, which combined renban lines with an equal region sum constraint. I decided to experiment with dual-purpose whispers / equal sum lines, and here is the result :)

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Adjacent digits along a lilac line must have a difference of 2 or less.
  • Adjacent digits along a green line must have a difference of 5 or more.
  • Digits on each line (both colours) have an equal sum N within each box it passes through.

Solution code: Row 5 (left to right) then column 8 (top to bottom)

That was really cool. I'm generally not fond of the sudoku part, but here I found it quite enjoyable and it flowed nicely. Great work Agent!

Thanks, interesting combination of rules. Satisfying to whittle down the possibilities for the lines.

Very interesting constraints and interaction. Good level of challenge for me, thanks!
