Genetics

(Published on 25. April 2022, 10:10 by Angelo)

This puzzle uses a (as far as I know) new constraint I would like to call Genetics.

Ruleset:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply.
  2. Genetics: Each digit has two properties. The first property is being odd or even. The second property is being low (1,2,3), medium (4,5,6) or high (7,8,9).
  3. Each cell that is directly connected to two cells in the row above it is considered a child of those two cells (the parents).
  4. Each child can be formed by taking a property of one parent and taking the other property of the other parent.
  5. Some clarifying examples: Parents with values 2 and 5 can have a 6 as a child, as the 6 gets the even property from the 2 and the medium property from the 5. Parents with values 1 and 5 can have a 1 as a child, as the child 1 gets the low property from the 1 and the odd property from the 5. Parents with values 3 and 8 could have two children with values 7 and 9, but they could also have two children with values 2 and 7.

The puzzle is also available online via F-Puzzles and CTC-App. Have fun solving!

More fun than filling out Punnett squares in middle school biology class.

As a genetics/genomics lecturer (hence my name) the subject of the sudoku couldn't be better :D The idea and the construction are both brilliant!

This is a very inventive puzzle with some nice logic behind it. It took me a couple minutes to fully grasp the ruleset, but once I did the solve was smooth. I'm going to join in with others and say I would be interested in seeing more of this ruleset.

What a remarkable puzzle! It wasn't terribly difficult but the logic was inventive and there were all sorts of fun deductions to make.

I'll admit the rules and the underlying logic took me a hot second to wrap my head around, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed the solve. This ruleset really feels like it has legs.

This puzzle helped me pass my biology exam on genetics! It might be a questionable family tree, but the puzzle is awesome! Very original idea, nice logic and smooth solve, 11/10!
