Knight's Templar

(Published on 31. January 2022, 19:57 by JeremyDover)

Please find below a gentle introduction to Keypad Knight lines, a new constraint developed by zegres. If you like this puzzle, please give this puzzle by zegres a try.

Rules

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Renban lines: Purple lines must contain a set of non-repeating, consecutive numbers, in any order.

Keypad Knight lines: Indigo lines connect digits a knight's move apart on a phone keypad. (e.g. 1 must connect to 6 or 8) Digits may repeat if allowed by other rules.

Just to leave a counterpoint, I didn't find this new constraint particularly interesting. I didn't enjoy solving with it in mind compared to other constraints like whispers, where the constraint is more logical, or like renban, where invariants or pairing certain numbers together emerge more organically. Maybe there is something really cool that can be done with it, but until then, I didn't get the impression that the hassle of handling it during solving justifies the new puzzle space it might open up.

JeremyDover: Thank you for solving, and your perspective. May I recommend that you try the linked puzzle of zegres? This puzzle was deliberately designed as more of an introduction, and may not have the features you're looking for.

At first I did not understand that 1 must be adjacent to 6 or 8 on the line. I wrongly assumed that they just needed to be anywhere on the line.

Once I got the rules correct it was a lovely solve. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for making such a great introduction to this new constraint. I love how you utilized so many properties of Keypad Knights Lines. The interaction with Renban is also awesome.

JeremyDover: Thanks for developing the constraint! I'm looking forward to further puzzles exploring it.
