Grotto Spelunking

(Published on 9. January 2022, 19:29 by fjam)

Solve a Simple Loop, reverse engineer the clues for a Cave puzzle and solve an Arrow Sudoku!
  • Simple Loop:
Draw a single non-intersecting loop of orthogonal connections through the centres of all unshaded cells, avoiding the given shaded cells.
  • Inverse Cave:
Shade all cells on the Simple Loop where the loop turns, having also turned in both adjacent cells on the loop. All shaded cells, including givens, must be connected orthogonally by other shaded cells to the edge of the grid, and the remaining unshaded cells must form one orthogonally connected area. Fill all the circles with the corresponding cave clues, such that they contain the total number of unshaded cells seen in a straight line vertically and horizontally from the cell, including the cell itself.
  • Arrow Sudoku:
Normal Sudoku rules apply. Digits along an arrow must sum to the digit in that arrow's circle.

Answer check will be triggered on Penpa by completing the Sudoku with the Simple Loop correctly drawn.

This was the first of two puzzles I constructed for Gliperal in the CTC Discord 2021 Secret Santa. I hadn't tried constructing a pencil puzzle other than variant Sudoku before and wanted to find a way to incorporate some of those ideas into something I was more familiar with to avoid accidentally making something trivial. The Inverse Cave idea was something I came up with to tie all three puzzle types together.

As someone who is not very experienced with either Simple Loop or Cave, this was delightful!

This was a great puzzle, especially considering I'd never done a proper Inverse Cave puzzle before, both the initial loop/cave setup and the actual sudoku that follows were very smooth and fun, thanks!
