Xandwich

(Published on 4. January 2022, 01:14 by Qodec)

Normal sudoku rules apply: Each row, column, and region indicated by thick borders in the grid must contain the digits 1 to 9 once each.

Each clue is a sandwich clue, or an X-sum clue, or both.

  1. A sandwich clue shows the sum of all digits between the 1 and the 9 in the indicated row or column.
  2. An X-sum clue shows the sum of the first X digits in the indicated row or column, where X is the digit closest to that clue.

Solution code: Row 5 and column 5. I.e. the 9 digits in row 5 from left to right, followed by the 9 digits in column 5 from top to bottom, for example: 123456789123456789

What an intricate puzzle, thanks. I will never have the first idea of how setters come up with puzzles like this!

Very nice interactions between X sums and Sandwiches ! Got a little lost in the mid solve because I did not spot a deduction in Box 4 right away. So I have to thank you for that eureka moment which felt very good when i found that little missing piece of the puzzle !

Lovely puzzle! Took me a while to figure out how to begin, but once I did I felt like this was set up to be a very smooth--albeit challenging--solve.

This was probably my fastest 4-star difficulty solve! And that was not because the deductions were easy, but because it was pretty well telegraphed where to look. An incredible flow in this one!

ooh i love the start. the best puzzles often set up a set of internal axioms that get created by the ruleset and geometry. great construction, bit brutal but very worth it.

Very clever construction (especially the opening), how some of the clues interact each other really surprises me :o
