Bow-A-Constrictor (Hidden Arrow + Snake Sudoku)
(Published on 28. December 2021, 11:10 by Nordy)
To solve this Sudoku, you must find a snake's path through a field of hidden arrows.
Note: this puzzle can be quite tricky. I recommend first learning the rules and basic logic by working through the given example puzzle.
Rules:
- Normal Sudoku: The digits 1 to 9 must appear in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
- Hidden Arrows: digits along arrow stems sum to the digit in the corresponding circle—except all of the arrow stems are hidden. Each circle has exactly one hidden arrow stem that is at least 2 cells long and extends from its circle in a straight line, either horizontally or vertically. Arrows must not cross, overlap, or share cells with other arrows.
- Snake: all non-arrow cells form a single snake, where a snake is a 1-cell wide path of orthogonally connected cells that does not touch itself orthogonally or form a loop (the snake has two ends, which must be determined). To be clear, if a cell is not on an arrow, that cell must be on the snake.
- Equal Cage Sums: Within a cage, the sum of arrow cells equals the sum of snake cells, and each cage must contain at least one arrow cell and at least one snake cell.
- Restriction on 1s: The digit 1 must only appear on arrows, and therefore must never appear on the snake.

Wow I loved every inch of this one. Difficult, with a lot of case testing in my experience, but with lots of cruel and fantastic tight logic. I'm happy I solved it off-stream, because I had many minutes of completely staring at the grid.
Even when I found the snake, completing the grid was hard. Wow.
