Wall Sudoku

(Published on 22. December 2021, 23:59 by Phistomefel)

This puzzle is a variant of a Consecutive Sudoku that uses similar clues as a Cave puzzle. It was inspired by Nordy's lovely puzzle Cavern Crawl.

Here are the rules:
  1. Each row, column and white or gray 3x3-box contains each digit from 1 to 9 exactly once.
  2. Place a wall between all orthogonally adjacent cells that contain consecutive digits. Some walls are already given. They separate two consecutive digits.
  3. A circled digit indicates how many cells it can see in horizontal and vertical direction including its own cell. Walls obstruct the view. Not necessarily all circles are given.
For illustration, here is an example on a 6x6 grid:

Here you find a link to the example.

The puzzle is available online via Penpa Plus, as well. Have fun solving!

Solution code: 7th and 8th row

I don't know what to say! Wow, many thanks Phistomefel.
I feel lucky to be able to solve these gems you set. I usually screenshot all my solves to collect them, but this could easily deserve a printed copy :)

Feels so good to have solve this one - after my failure with the Lighthouse. :D

@filuta: Thank you! I am happy that you enjoyed the break-in.
@craigs: I am glad you liked the puzzle despite being stuck for so long. And thanks for persevering! :)
@Nordy: Thank you very much for providing the inspiration for the puzzle and the nice fedback! My original idea was to take your ruleset, but let the solvers place the walls themselves, but it turned out to work a bit nicer with the consecutive condition.
@SudokuExplorer: I really love the name "Roman Ruins". Making the walls a subset of the region borders is a good idea. But before I try this, I would like to find out whether there is another ruleset that is a bit flexible and allows me to get to a unique solution of the region division problem. GW looks quite good.

@Phistomefel: Yes, with XV rules we'd get the Roman ruins! ;-)
For your chaos construction idea, maybe the walls could be a subset of the borders of the regions. That would be less constrained.

Wow, exceptional puzzle! Many interesting knots to untangle, some very tricky. I especially like that you have to navigate and build the caverns simultaneously.

I am honored that Cavern Crawl was an inspiration! Unfortunately, setting that series made solving this puzzle more challenging. In Cavern Crawl, walls are notoriously unhelpful, but here they are quite potent. Whenever I found myself banging my head against a wall (literally), I just needed to look at a wall more closely. Nevertheless, my enjoyment was not diminished, and I am always grateful to have a spotlight cast on one of my blindspots.

I thought the logic behind the break-in was fun, but about 2/3 the way through the puzzle I got stuck for an hour.
Thank you Phistomefel for the wonderful puzzle!

Really enjoyable puzzle with a cool break-in (that for me personally was quite hard to see). Thanks.

@Magnus: Thank you for the nice feedback!
@SudokuExplorer: Many thanks! I am also glad you liked the concept. What I like about it is that you can easily replace the consecutive codition by something else, e.g. by XV clues. Also, I am investigating the potential to create a Chaos Construction out of it, but it is heavily constrained.
@Florian Wortmann: Vielen Dank! Es freut mich sehr, wenn dir das Rätsel gefallen hat.

This is a fantastic puzzle! The logic path flows quite nicely once you break in, and it's quite satisfying to watch everything fall in place at the end.
