Median Quads

(Published on 13. November 2021, 05:07 by RockyRoer)

The Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • [Median Quads]Each circle represents the median of the four surrounding cells. One of the gray circles marked with "4?" has a median of 4, but the solver must determine which one. Recall, the median of an even number of cells is the average of the middle two numbers when numbers are written in order:
    • ex: 1468 has a median of 5.
    • ex: 1355 has a median of 4.
    • ex: 3447 has a median of 4.

RockyRoer puzzles are the GOAT! Really loved this one

REPLY: thanks for the solve and the encouragement, I appreciate it! If you enjoyed this, the X-Medians puzzle also uses this median concepts, and is a solve or two away from a rating i think. https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Raetsel/zeigen.php?id=0008DE

Very nice puzzle! I completely overlooked that you published this one, even though I tested it a while back, so luckily I was alerted by the new Old Miles puzzle. Over to that one now, I guess! :-)

This was a tough one for me! But very clever and creative, and fun to solve!

Median little killer would be a nice puzzle. You may even try a puzzle where each little killer clue indicates either the mean, median or mode of the digits on its direction.

REPLY: The median little killers does have great potential and I’ve got four broken drafts of it already :-) And an arrows version of mean median and mode is what I made first which has inspired this exploration of median :-). That’s here: https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Raetsel/zeigen.php?id=0006EI

I know your mean, median, mode arrow puzzle. That’s why I thought you may think of applying that idea to little killers.

Nice, will there be a mean quad on the horizon?

Reply: Probably not by me... I'm trying to explore what all median logic can give. I'm currently working on X-Medians and Little Killer Medians. But you I'm sure you could set a Mean Quads :-) And I'd love to see other setters take on the Median ruleset -- I think it has much untapped potential.

There is a lot of potential. Every sum can be replaced with these kind of rules. But I'm recently occupied by linking puzzles rules. It'll take a while before I post mean quad. I'll be happy to see somebody else other than me try this idea, in which case, I can come up with more ideas. I still don't want to break my at least 3 day one rule.
Also I replace sum with difference/product/quotient/remainder these kind of light cal rules. Statistic indicators has a longer exposition, kind of not my style.
