Shikasudoku

(Published on 8. November 2021, 18:44 by Qodec)

This puzzle is a shikaku-sudoku hybrid, which is inspired by Sudokurotto by Phistomefel and Juosan Killer sudoku by udukos.

Normal sudoku rules apply. Additionally:

  • Divide the grid into rectangular regions of orthogonally connected cells. Each rectangle contains exactly one circle. A single cell with a circle counts as a 1x1 rectangle.
  • A number in a circle represents how many cells are in the rectangle the circle belongs to.
  • Rectangles cannot overlap.
  • Every cell in the grid is part of a rectangle.
  • Digits may repeat in a rectangle if allowed by other rules.

Here is an example:

You can try it over here on f-puzzles: https://f-puzzles.com/?id=yeuknp9h or Penpa+: https://git.io/JXgfq.

An easier 6x6 puzzle to get familiar with some of the logic is this:

You can try it over here on f-puzzles: https://f-puzzles.com/?id=ygme6y69 or Penpa+ with answer check: https://git.io/JPxw4.

Now for the main puzzle:

Note: the initial version of this puzzle did not have the given 1 in r7c5, which allowed for additional solutions. This has now been fixed, thanks a lot to everyone who pointed it out to me immediately after they saw it! And thanks to Tristan for creating links with the fix!

Good luck!

Solution code: Rows 2 and 8. I.e. the 9 digits in row 2 from left to right, followed by the 9 digits in row 8 from left to right, for example: 123456789123456789

Very enjoyable puzzle, I liked how you crafted different logic in the two puzzles with lots of rewarding deduction. Loved the hybrid, thanks Qodec :)

Fixed puzzle by adding given digit 1 (r7c5). See note in description.

I came to the following tiling of the grid, but the remaining sudoku has multiple solutions:
https://git.io/JXooW

I suspect my tiling is an unexpected alternative to the intended solution?

@henrypijames Oh if this were true it would make me very sad, but I thank you very much for pointing it out. I don't have the time right now to look into it, but I'll deactivate for now to see if I can or should fix it later this week. Many apologies!
