Sudoku Variants Series (331) - Sandwiched Sum Skyscrapers Sudoku

(Published on 28. July 2021, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Sandwiched Sum Skyscrapers Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Each digit represents a skyscraper of the corresponding height. Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of the visible buildings looking from the digit 1 in the direction of the digit 9 in the respective row or column, where higher buildings block the view of lower buildings. The digit 1 is not part of this sum.

Inspiration for this type comes from Mark Sweep.

Solve online in Penpa+ (thx again to Henry!)

Solution code: Column 1, followed by column 3.

Very nice and smooth puzzle! Glad a puzzle of mine was able to inspire you.

@Dandelo and @cdwg2000:
I followed the original instructions as much as possible (except for making it a sum instead of counting the skyscrapers).
I assumed the spectator-point of view as described by Dandelo. But either way, with or without 1 and/or 9, the puzzle has correct and uniform instructions.

Very awesome puzzle as always! It took a minute to get my head around the ruleset, but it wasn't too hard in the end :)

@cdwg: I don't agree, the 9 is seen and should be included IMO. The question is about the 1.

If you see it from an abstract point of view, it looks strange to include the 9, but not the 1. Then you should include both (or maybe none of them, as you suggested).

But if you have in mind the image, that 1 is the spectator, looking at the 9, then it is clear that it can see the 9, but not itself.

So the author should decide, which possibility he prefers, but all of them are reasonable.

@Richard

A small suggestion: Can you also remove the number 9 and subtract 9 from all the external prompt numbers.:)
